Herbs and spice and all things nice
Herbs and spices have been used for their incredible medicinal and food properties since Biblical days. Many herbs and spices are mentioned in the Bible such as: cinnamon, garlic, saffron, and coriander, to name but a few. Some of the health benefits of these and other herbs and spices are phenomenal, to say the least. It is advisable to use them; not only in preparing food but also for their special medicinal properties. Below are some of the herbs and spices that are available to us today and their incredible health benefits.
Cinnamon is a very popular spice and very tasty too. It is often used in baked goods and in various other kinds of foods. One of its main health benefits is that it can significantly lower blood sugar levels. It contains the wonder-ingredient, cinnamaldehyde, which is responsible for the spice’s medicinal properties. Other notable health benefits include anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits, making it a must-have in any kitchen.
Turmeric contains curcumin, which is a powerful anti-oxidant with extraordinary anti-inflammatory benefits. It helps fight oxidative damage and studies have suggested that it can help to reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer, relieve arthritis, and possibly even help fight certain brain disorders such as dementia.
Turmeric is often used in curries and gives curries a lovely yellow color.
Cayenne pepper is often used in spicy dishes, because of its chili properties. It is a very hot spice. The spice contains capsaicin, which studies have found helps suppress appetite and assist with fat-burning.
Ginger is a well-loved spice – often used in the kitchen in a wide variety of dishes, from baked goods to curries to drinks. It is much-loved by pregnant ladies for its effectiveness in alleviating nausea linked to morning –sickness in pregnancy. Ginger greatly helps in alleviating all kinds of nausea, has anti-inflammatory properties and it has also been known to reduce pain.
Rosemary is a garden herb that is often used in preparing red meat dishes. It is also very powerful when used as an essential oil. Often you will find hair products stating that it contains Rosemary oil. However, it has other benefits too – such as the ability to suppress allergy symptoms and relieve nasal congestion.
Studies have shown that peppermint oil can help relieve pain symptoms associated with irritable bowel syndrome and it also has some powerful nausea-relieving symptoms.
Evidence has been found through various studies, that Sage extract can help improve memory and brain function of patients with Alzheimer’s disease. It can also help improve the memory of healthy people of various ages.
Lastly on the list is Garlic, my granny’s favorite! Oh, how we were doctored with garlic while growing up. Garlic has so many wonderful benefits such as it can lower blood pressure in those suffering from high blood pressure, help fight and ward of common colds, helps reduce cholesterol and studies suggest it can even improve heart disease.
Hopefully, this list will let you think differently about some of the wonderful ingredients that are available to us today that is often overlooked.
It is our responsibility as Christians to look after our bodies as best we can. According to 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, our bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit who is within us and we have been bought with a price. Therefore we must glorify God with our bodies. And how would we glorify God with our bodies? – By taking care of our bodies as best that we can so that we may carry out God’s work on the earth and fulfill our God-given assignments and purpose.
