10 Must-Read Books on Self-Development

So Many to Choose From

There are so many awesome books these days to help you to develop and become successful. This is a list of my personal favourite top ten books. Having said that, this list is by no means exhaustive. New good books are coming out all the time.

Top 10 Books to Change Your Life

1. The Bible

The scriptures are timeless and the ultimate success handbook. Big players in the personal development space such as Jim Rohn and Zig Ziglar agree that the Bible is an excellent manual for success in all areas of life. It stands head and shoulders above any other self-development book.

2. Think and Grow Rich – Napoleon Hill

This is a hallmark book. You would be hard-pressed to find another book written that has influenced as many of today’s ultra-successful. Time and time again if you ask a super-successful person what book it is that has had a tremendous impact on their life and success, they will say, “Think and Grow Rich” has been that book for them. It took me a while to pick up and read this book, but it kept being mentioned by highly successful people and so I finally bought a copy and read it. I was blown away. It is an absolute must-read of the highest priority.

3. The Power of Positive Thinking – Norman Vincent Peale

This is another classic book in the self-development space. Dr. Peale highlights how faith and positive thinking can be harnessed to bring about positive results in your life. This book has changed the trajectory of my life since I read it in my late teens. I don’t know where I would be if I had not picked up this book in the local library and read it. This is one of the first books I read on personal development.

4. Chicken Soup for the Soul – Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen.

This series of books are compilations of short stories that inspire and motivate people to become all that they can be. Jack Canfield is well-known for his role and contribution in “The Secret” movie and book. These are must-read books for short bursts of inspiration and motivation. They also have a tendency to warm the heart and soul.

5. The Secret – Rhonda Byrne

The Secret is a modern book on harnessing the power of your thoughts and the mind to bring about success and the things you want in life. Sometimes this book has been misunderstood and harshly criticized by critics, but it remains a very powerful book.

6. The 7 habits of highly effective people – Stephen Covey

With over 15 million copies sold worldwide, it is evident that this book is a must-read for anyone that is serious about becoming effective and progressing in life. It has been a game-changer for a lot of people. Stephen Covey knows what he’s talking about.

7. How to win friends and influence people – Dale Carnegie

Another worldwide bestseller, this book is especially helpful for people who work in sales or positions whereby their success is dependent on their ability to influence other people, but it can also be of enormous help for just about anyone. Who would not like to win friends and influence people? This is a powerful book.

8. Failing Forward – John C. Maxwell

On the road to success, there will be many failures. Get used to it. The key is to not give up. John C. Maxwell teaches in this book how to use your failures as stepping stones on the road to success so that failure does not become a stopping point, but rather another step on the road that leads to your success.

9. The 4-Hour Work Week – Timothy Ferriss

If you have aspirations of ditching the 9-5 and becoming a digital nomad then this is the book for you. Learn how to work smarter instead of harder and create a life by design.

10. Eat that Frog! – Brian Tracy

While the title might seem silly, make no mistake – this book means serious business and will definitely help you kick the bad habit of procrastination out the door. Brian Tracy is a best-selling author and renowned international speaker and in this book, he teaches you how to manage your time more effectively by doing the thing you don’t like doing that has high value before you do the easy or more likable stuff.

Final Thoughts

Well, there you have it, some of the best books to read to improve yourself and set you on the road to success. Get your hands on these books, even if it is from your local library. That is how I started – because when I started reading self-development books as a teenager, I was as broke as they come. I didn’t have any money, but I still read as many books as I could. I borrowed them from the library.

Which book is your favourite book on personal development? Is there another one that you would recommend?
