Gaining traction and becoming successful can be achieved by raising your daily standards. What do I mean by this? Well, it simply means that you raise the standard by which you do certain things in your life. You do them to a higher standard of quality in other words.
Turning “Should’s ” into “Must’s”
Tony Robbins talks about changing your “should’s” into “must’s”. So instead of saying “I should do such and such..” now becomes “I must do such and such”. It no longer becomes an option to do, but it becomes an essential thing to do. But in order for it to work, it must be a “must” to you, not to other people. It has to be important to you.
For example, if you have a goal of losing a certain amount of weight, but instead of doing the necessary daily exercises you watch tv every day and eat chips, then it is a certainty that you will not achieve that goal. But if you set the daily standard to actually do the required daily exercises every single day – then you will see a difference and you will be well on your way to reaching your goal. What was the difference? You set your new daily standard: “I must do the daily exercises” instead of, “I should do these exercises daily”. Therein lies the secret to achievement.

And this theory does not just apply to work and business. It can be applied to other areas of your life as well. You can choose to raise your standards in areas such as your personal standard for grooming yourself or cleaning your home or how you parent or in your relationships.
If you hold yourself accountable to a higher standard than anybody else expects of you, I can guarantee you that it will change your life. Because now you are not competing with anybody but yourself. You now want to become the best that you can be and you are accountable to yourself.
I have implemented this exact strategy and it is already yielding phenomenal success. Whereas previously I would put off doing certain things and procrastinate in doing them. But now I have set a new daily standard in that I am actually doing those things that will bring me closer to my end goal. The result is I get more stuff done and I feel good about myself, which motivates me to get even more stuff done.
Hold yourself responsible for a higher standard than anybody else expects of you. Never excuse yourself. Never pity yourself. Be a hard master to yourself – and be lenient to everybody else.
–Henry Ward Beecher
Isn’t that such a powerful statement?
Consistency
When you reach this turning point in your thinking and doing, the tide will change for you. The key to doing this is choosing to raise your standards on a consistent basis.
In being consistent lies the power. Consistency in setting and following through with your own self-imposed daily standards. Even when you don’t feel like it. That comes down to your own self-discipline again.
Setting goals are absolutely essential for becoming successful, but goals in themselves don’t achieve goals. Doing something about those goals is what gets the job done. And more so, doing something consistently about those goals will help you reach your end goal.
I once heard someone say that he tried for almost 20 years to achieve certain goals with very little to show for it. He’s tried all kinds of goal setting courses, but it yielded no results. That all changed when he learned how to set and adhere to daily standards. He started doing something about the goals – little by little, day by day by setting daily standards for doing things. He has since managed to achieve his goals and has become very successful in his career. Today he is a millionaire.

A Spirit of Excellence
You also have to create lasting standards of excellence to be successful. There is also no point in doing whatever you have to do to bring you closer to your goal, but you’re just doing it to get it done. Part of raising your daily standards involve going about doing what needs to be done with a spirit of excellence. In other words, raising the standards of quality of the work that you have to do in order to reach your ultimate goal.
Change your environment
What can also greatly help you to raise your standards and raise your game is to get into an environment where it is better. Where the standards are already higher. Where people are already doing the things that you are aspiring to do. Because that would mean in order for you to just stay in the game, you will have to level up and raise your standards. That will pull you along and up to a level of success.
