The Power of Making a Firm Decision

Nothing happens until you decide. Now I know that sounds pretty basic but read that statement again. Nothing happens until you decide. Nothing happens until you make a firm decision that something will happen.

When you make a firm decision to do something and if you really and truly commit to doing it – that is when things get done. That is when the magic happens.

I discovered this truth a few years ago. If you do not make a firm decision it will always result in ineffectiveness and failure. It’s because internally failure is still permissible for you, it’s still an option. You still consider the possibility of failure as acceptable in the area that you are trying to change. Let me assure you once again that nothing will happen until you decide what will happen and what will not happen. When failure is no longer an option for you then things will start moving forward. That is the power of making a quality decision.

Decision Paralysis

Sometimes it happens that people are afraid of making the wrong decisions and so end up not making a decision at all. It’s what is called decision paralysis. Yes, it can be scary to think about the consequences an important decision can have on your life and on the lives of those who it will affect, but decisions are a part of life whether we like them or not.

Failing to make a decision is a decision in itself! By not making a decision at all you could be making the situation worse instead of better. So after evaluating all your options, go ahead and make your decision.

What does the Bible say about decisions?

In the book of James 1:8 the Bible says that a double-minded man is unstable in all he does. In other words, he will be a failure because he is double-minded in his decision-making process. He can’t decide. You can’t make one decision now and the next moment you change your mind and the next moment you change your mind yet again. That is a prescription for failure and an unstable life.

And remember that you are always free to ask God for wisdom to make good decisions in the first place. That should give you peace and the confidence to make good decisons. (James 1:8)

What happens after you’ve made a decision?

Once you have made a decision and committed to it, there is one more step: following through on your decision and dedicating your efforts to it.

Some people get to the step of making the decision, but then do nothing about it. They become complacent and then they become stagnant. Following through on your decision is key to your success in the area where you desire to change.

Do something everyday

Do something every day that will back up your decision. The operative word is “do”. You must do something in order to progress. Henry David Thoreau said: “If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.” One can replace the word “dreams” with “goals” and this saying would still hold true. The success that is the spinoff is not luck, but simply the end-product of working every day towards your decision and goal.
