When you hate your job
Do you dread waking up in the morning and having to go to a job that you hate doing? Do you cringe at the drama, office politics or just the actual nitty- gritty of the job? Do you feel out of alignment with who you really are and what you believe you are supposed to be doing with your life?Do you hate your job? Well, if you have answered “yes” to any or all of the above questions, then rest assured – you are not alone if you hate your job. Many people do. Here are some points to consider before you make any important and possibly life-changing decisions though.
Work as if unto God
Don’t just quit your job, instead, you can change your thoughts that you have towards your job and so find new meaning in it. Col 3:23-24 says: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Jesus Christ you are serving.” We should therefore treat all work that we do as if we are working for God Himself. The most menial tasks will find a new meaning then. Whether it is changing a diaper as a stay-at-home mom or serving burgers in a fast-food restaurant or being a teacher, or being a doctor.
All work is meaningful, has a purpose and can be seen as a ministry unto the Lord. Col 3:17 says: “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” People who view their job as a calling tend to work harder, longer and thus have more success in their careers.
Success takes hard work
Success in any job is based on long-term commitment, faith, discipline, and plain hard work. Maybe you are in the trenches now, but if you stick it out and do your job with a spirit of excellence then perhaps other doors of opportunity will open for you. Sometimes God tests us with small opportunities in order to see if we are faithful over the little and seemingly insignificant opportunities that He gives us before He gives us greater responsibilities and greater opportunities.
Learn to love the opportunity
Your job right now might be the thing that leads to greater opportunities further down the road in the future. Learn to be grateful for the open door that has been presented to you. Love the opportunity you have been given to learn, to build a future, a life and success. Success is a journey after all. Be thankful!
Focus on the positives
Sometimes we can get so side-tracked and influenced by negative office talk or just our own negative thinking. Regroup and take a moment to reflect on all the positive things about the job. Are there some aspects of the job that you do like and enjoy? Do you have some great co-workers perhaps? Is the pay decent? Is the work environment pleasant? Is it a stable organization with lots of scope for growth? These are all very valuable aspects of a job situation.
Look for other opportunities within the organization
If you are unhappy in a specific job within the organization, but you are happy with the organization as a whole, then strongly consider seeking another job opportunity within the same company. It might prove to be your best strategy in this situation.
Find meaningful work outside the organization
Consider a side-hustle or a hobby to fulfill your desire for work that you love doing. A second job could also provide you with a second paycheck, which is always welcome! Volunteer work, on the other hand, could prove to be deeply satisfying, meaningful and provide you with a sense of fulfillment that is not always possible to find in a regular job.
When you’re sure you want to leave
If after taking all these points into consideration you still find that you want to leave the company then please take the following into consideration:
– Refrain from bad-mouthing your boss or the organization
– Stay out of office gossip
– Remain professional at all times
– Continue to give your work your all right up until the moment that you leave
– Never burn your bridges- you never know if you might need to use that road again!
– Sometimes the grass may seem greener on the other side until we are on the other side!
Final thoughts
If you have a decent-paying job and it is not intolerable, then consider staying on. If it is unbearable and the environment is unsafe, then it is advisable to leave. But whatever you decide to do, know that you will have to live comfortably with the consequences of your decisions and your actions.
And lastly, but most importantly – do not forget to pray and to seek God’s will for your life.

Ultimately He has the final say and He knows what is best for you. He knows what will make you happy and how to deal with your unique situation. Consult with the Holy Spirit, He is there to guide you after all. He has been appointed for this very purpose. God knows the plans He has for your life, and they are all for your good (Jeremiah 29:11-13 “….. For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”
