Praise and worship is one of my absolute favourite topics. I can talk about it all day long. I am absolutely passionate about it. The benefits of Praise and Worship are just so amazing. Praise and worship has so much power, but we as believers don’t always fully understand what exactly happens when we worship God. To some, it is just a ritual and part of the Sunday service and so they worship with their lips only. So many things happen in the spiritual realm when we praise and worship. We will look into these, but first, let’s look at what exactly praise and worship is.
What is worship?
Worship is the act of magnifying God and of expressing reverence and adoration towards God for all that He is. Although music is one of the most common forms of Worship that we know today it certainly is “more than a song” as Michael W Smith sings in his famous Christian song “Heart of Worship”. Worship rather is a lifestyle of holiness, because we long to please God and also because we love the Father. True worship comes from the heart and it is authentic. That is what the Father is after ultimately.
John 4:23-24 says: “Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth.” Yes, we are spirit beings so it is not surprising that the Father requires that we worship Him with our spirits.
When we worship we let go of ourselves and our own self-worship as we fix our eyes on God. As we magnify God, we become smaller and thus we allow God to be God and work in us and in our lives.
What is Praise?
When we praise God we are telling Him and others how wonderful He is – how awesome He is. We acknowledge His authority, power, goodness, mercy and just all the other wonderful things about who and what God is. Psalm 100:4 says: “Enter His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise”. We are also commanded to praise God in Psalm 150: 6(NIV): “Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Praise the LORD”. God loves to be praised!
The results of praise and worship
When we praise and worship God with our whole hearts – we usher in the presence of God. In Psalm 22:3 we learn that “God inhabits the praises of His people” Although God is all around us already just like the air we breathe, when we praise and worship He shows up on a different level. And it is in His presence that the following happens:
- Doors that were closed opens up
- Doors that should not be open are closed
- Chains of spiritual bondage and strongholds are broken in His presence
- Healing takes place
- Deliverance takes place
- Evil is sent running away!
- We receive wisdom
- Fullness of joy
- We are refreshed
- Our faith is strengthened
Now I don’t know about you, but these benefits of praising and worshipping God sound absolutely amazing to me. Again this proves to me how good and loving God truly is. Next time in church when it is time for praise and worship – engage fully and make a Godly connection. It is so worth it in the end.
