When I first discovered that the Bible has verses about money in it I was amazed. I didn’t even think that God had something to say about money. So when I started learning these scriptures and about what God has to say about money, it started changing everything. Why?
Because my money-mindset changed. My old and very incorrect way of thinking about money was being replaced by God’s Word regarding money. And God’s perspective is always the correct way to look at things.
If you will apply these scriptures they could change everything for you too when it comes to your finances. Let’s dive in.
“And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”
God is our source of supply, not the world, not your job, not your brother, not your friend – nobody but God. He can certainly use these avenues to work through to get the money to you, but never mistake the avenue for the source. The ultimate source of supply is always God. He turns the flow of money on. Know this and trust this.
“Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, That there may be food in My house….”
Now I have seen this scripture being abused by some preachers who try and guilt people into giving. But it need not be so. Ultimately it is between you and God. When you get God involved in your finances and you begin to give simply because you Love God and out of obedience to God, you will start seeing a change in your finances. God also loves a cheerful giver. Getting God involved in your finances has all kinds of benefits. Malachi 3:10 -12 clearly spells out some of these benefits.
“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for our sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.”
Oh my, this is the scripture that really changed the way I saw money. I used to think that it was a sin to be rich, but here it says that Jesus became poor so that I might become rich. He took the curse of poverty upon himself so that I can become rich. You being rich was paid for in blood!
We shouldn’t aim to become rich just for the sakes of being rich, no. We want all God has for us, not just for us and for our families, but so that we can become a blessing to others! Yes, we are blessed to be a blessing.
“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”
This scripture has been greatly misquoted. Money itself is not evil, but it is the love of money that is the problem. If you love God and your heart is right, then if you get money you will still love God. Money doesn’t change that. Same thing if your heart is black, evil and greedy and you get money – nothing will change. You will remain the same – still evil and greedy.
So it is then clear that we are to steer clear of allowing our hearts to love money. Money is a means to get stuff done, and it can be a tremendous blessing. But money in and of itself alone can never be your God. God is God. Always remember that.
“The blessing of the Lord makes one rich, And he adds no sorrow with it.”
Right here I can say a Halleluiah! Wow, this scripture can get me dancing! I simply love it. Just read that scripture again. So if God’s blessing is on you, it will make you rich. And he will add no sorrow to it. Being rich is only one part of God’s blessing, it is not the entire blessing.
How awesome is God. Yes, but now get it right in your mind – we are not rich and therefor blessed, no, but we are blessed and therefor rich. Seek God first then the blessing will follow. Always God first. Some folks are rich, but they are miserable and full of problems. Why? Because God’s blessing is not on them. God’s kind of blessing of riches adds no sorrow to it!
“Owe no one anything except to love one another.…”
In plain English – stay out of debt! Now some have asked if it is a sin to be in debt. No, it is not, but it certainly is not God’s best for us. And this verse clearly says that we as Christians should stay out of debt. Being debt-free is a blessing in itself. Because if you as a Christian are debt-free then you are free to give as the Holy Spirit leads you to.
However if you have several debts to pay, with very little if anything, left over to give, then how can we possibly be a blessing to others. We as Christians should be the “blessers”. Also we should be the lenders, not the borrowers(Deuteronomy 28:12). Think about that for a minute.
